Swansea meeting, May 2018

Our fourth meeting of the year took us back to the Railmens Club in Swansea.

It was another superb meet-up for us, with guests from the National Asbestos Helpline and Birchall Blackburn Law there to answer any questions our members had.

We also discussed the responses we have received from several local Assembly Members after we sent letters informing them of our pleural plaques petition, and how we can best move forward to get more signatures.

With the help of the National Asbestos Helpline, we have put together some posters for the petition, which Eddie and Brian will be distributing around the local area.

If you would like to view the poster, click here.

We’ll be back in Taffs Well for June’s meeting – if you would like more information, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. You can call our group co-ordinator, Eddie Gilbertson, on 07572 090 500, or you can send an email to swasg.wales@gmail.com.

Our next Swansea meeting, May 30

The next meeting of The South Wales Asbestos Support Group will be held on Wednesday, May 30. We’ll be meeting up at the Swansea Railmens Club & Institute, 42 Wind Street, Swansea, SA1 1EE.

Our Swansea meetings are always lively, with plenty of people to chat to as we discuss the goings-on and how to get more people involved with our Petition to Reinstate Pleural Plaques.

As always, we’ll have food and refreshments for everyone, and you are more than welcome to bring family and friends.

Swansea meeting, March 2018

We had another great meeting in Swansea for our second South Wales Asbestos Support Group meet-up of 2018, this time at the Railmens Club & Institute.

We were met by a large group of warm and friendly faces, both regular members and others attending for the first time.

This month, we were also joined by David Lloyd, a team member for Carolyn Harris, Member of Parliament for Swansea East.

David was with us to show his support, as well as give some great and helpful advice on how we can best move forward with our petition for reinstating compensation for pleural plaques.

We again had a chance to have a good chat with each other and discuss how we have all got on since the last meeting, and managed to fit in some food and drink amongst the chatter.

Always going forward

Following on from the success of the first two SWASG meetings of the year, we plan on maintaining our fantastic momentum with the petitition to reinstate compensation for pleural plaques, with perhaps more of a focus on local areas in the coming months.

If you would like to get involved with spreading the word about this petition and indeed the awareness of all asbestos-related illnesses, please join us at one of our upcoming meetings to find out how you can help.

The next meeting of the year will be held on Thursday, April 26. This will be a return to the Taffs Well Rugby Club – Maes Gwyn, Taffs Well, CF15 7JD.

First meeting of SWASG in 2018, and announcing future dates

Our first meeting of the South Wales Asbestos Support Group in 2018 was held on February 22 at the wonderful Taffs Well Rugby Club.

We were joined by some regular friendly faces, even a few travelling over from Swansea, as well as a new member attending for the first time after hearing about us from a friend.

Plans were discussed about upcoming meetings throughout the year and we were all overjoyed at the news that our Pleural Plaques Petition was nearing 2,000 signatures!

If you haven’t already signed our online petition asking the House of Commons to reinstate compensation for those of us diagnosed with the condition in Wales and England, please do so as we truly feel that the system as it is is unjust and unfair. You can sign and show your support by clicking here: Reinstate Compensation for Pleural Plaques in England and Wales

Following the successful meeting we had in February, our next meeting of SWASG will be on Wednesday, March 28. This will be held at the Railmens Club & Institute, 42 Wind Street, Swansea, SA1 1EE.

The third meeting of the year will be held on Thursday, April 26. This will be a return to the Taffs Well Rugby Club – Maes Gwyn, Taffs Well, CF15 7JD.

Celebrating Christmas and remembering who we’ve lost…

We had a wonderful 2017 Christmas party at Cardiff’s Village Hotel – turkey and all the trimmings!

There were more than 20 of our members able to make the Christmas feast and enjoy good food, drink and company. Plus there was a huge raffle! Thank you so much to everyone who donated raffle prizes and for the donations for the raffle tickets… The money raised will go toward the wonderful work of the cancer centre, Maggie’s Swansea.

Before the festivities began we were also able to mention the members we have lost over the past year. They will be remembered fondly over the Christmas period and we miss them…

We’ll be in touch in the New Year about future meetings and what we’ll be getting up to in 2018.

In the meantime have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year.
